About Me
Prof (Dr) Aftabuz Zaman worked as Head, Irrigation Expatriate Team, Government of Uganda for 2-year period (1994-1996) under ITEC Programme being deputed by the Government of India to design, lay out and installation of famers managed small scale irrigation for sustainable crop cultivation. He was also designated as IFFCO-Chair Professor. He published more than 110 research publications and 179 publications in the proceedings of national and international seminars and conferences held in the country and abroad. He guided and supervised 7 (seven) Ph D and at least 50 (fifty) students towards post graduate thesis work. He worked as Programme Coordinator, West Bengal Accelerated Development of Minor Irrigation Project (World Bank) (20 Sep 14 to 2 Sep 16).

Prof. (Dr) Aftabuz Zaman (b 27.05.1954) specializes in Agricultural Water Management for enhancing crop and water productivity as an Agronomist and formerly Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Director of Research, Head, Department of Agronomy in Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya [SAU], West Bengal, India. He is a former Chief Scientist in AICRP on Water Management (ICAR) and former Associate Director of Research, Regional Research Station, Old Alluvial Zone (Presently UBKV, Pundibari). He has coordinated, associated and involved with post-graduate teaching programme at the University and has significant research experiences in field of water management and in academia and well as having considerable administrative experiences in different capacity at various time frame.

Description:
Field experiment was conducted with potato (Solanum tuberosum) during winter (rabi) seasons of 2013-14 and 2014-15 to study the effect of different organic and inorganic sources of nutrients on productivity, specific gravity and processing quality of potato cultivars. The experiment comprised of three varieties viz. Kufri Chipsona-1 (V1), Kufri Chipsona-2 (V2), Kufri Jyoti (V3) and four nutrient sources viz. FYM @ 35 t/ha (N1), FYM @ 30 t/ha + bio-fertilizers (N2), FYM @ 25 t/ha + mustard cake @ 10 q/ha (N3), recommended dose of NPK (180:150:150 kg/ha N, P2O5, K2O respectively) (N4). Kufri Chipsona-1 recorded maximum dry weight of tuber, total number of tubers per hectare, total tuber yield (28.18 and 28.39 t/ha) and NPK uptake. Kufri Chipsona-2 attained maximum plant height, number of small tubers (â€¹25g). Kufri Chipsona-1 produced about 19.10, 18.44% more yield than Kufri Chipsona-2 and 6.22, 6.21% more yield than Kufri Jyoti in the successive two years. Chipsona varieties produced high dry matter, starch, specific gravity, acceptable chip colour content and low reducing sugar. Kufri Jyoti produced maximum germination percentage, vitamin C and reducing sugar content. Recommended dose of NPK (N4) showed the best performance in terms of growth and yield parameters as compared to organic sources of nutrients. FYM @ 30 t/ha along with bio-fertilizers (N2) recorded maximum soil fertility build up after harvest of the crop and also helped to achieve required processing qualities of potato tuber.

Some of the factors are that have an influence on what the farming system will be. The operator of the farming system is the farmer or the farming family. To farmers, the way in which they earn their living and the economic, social, and cultural well-being of their households are linked closely and cannot be separated.

Description:
The farmersâ€™ practice to use more fertilizers with more depth of submergence was resisted. The farmers were adopted with potato cultivation with high doses of fertilizers and more water. The intervention succeeded to reduce fertilizer as well as irrigation application to the crop without affecting rather with enhancement of yield. With adoption of recommended water management practices, yield of mustard increased up to an extent of 9.0% with 36% more water use efficiency. Groundnut grown during summer season was introduced with water management practices as per recommendations wherein farmers get more yield and more water use efficiency. Introduced raised bed furrow irrigation for tomato, cabbage and cauliflower; Use of polythene lining in the field channel was introduced to reduce the conveyance losses of irrigation water. Farmers were trained to maintain earthen field channels; Use of low depth of irrigation up to or less than 4 cm was introduced and adoption of crop diversification was encouraged.
